The objectives of the project are:


• Objective 1 To produce tools for including the biogeochemical services provided by grassland plants in the EIA of projects of the mining and smelting sector.

• Objective 2 To produce tools for including services provided by grassland plants in the SEA of plans and policies with impact on river basins with mining and smelting areas

• Objective 3 To extract the consequences of the EIA and SEA tools on the integrated management of mining and smelting projects and grassland plants diversity in river basins.


The techniques allow for the assessment of the impact at distance from the project area, for SEA by cumulative impact assessment between multiple projects in a catchment, and for SEA of plans and policies directly affecting the landscape structure, in particular the grassland species diversity and overall cover. The guidelines will allow for the development of coherent management plans of landscapes having in their structure both areas with conservation values and mining activities. At the same time, the introduction of a concerted education of interdisciplinary trained PhD students will ascertain a long-lasting, sustainable education profile with relevance to mining areas management. We involved a government agency as end-user (http://www.mmediu.ro/, letter of interest for the results of the project from the Biodiversity Directorate). We aim to provide government authorities with fused guidelines for the integrated management of mining areas and plants diversity in complex catchments in a way that overcomes the practices of separated agencies by focusing on plant mediated eco-toxicological risks resulting from metal contamination on-site, as well as from transport through water paths in surface water and international water ways.


The project directly addresses topic 3.3.5 Creation of data bases and mathematical models for the decision making cycle in view of the conservation, reconstruction and sustainable use of the biological and ecological diversity, and supports also the topic 3.3.3 Eco-technologies for ecological rehabilitation and reconstruction, technologies for remediation of contaminated soils because by rehabilitation and reconstruction works in mining areas addresses or leads to the formation of grasslands.
