The impact assessment of projects, plans and policies on biological and ecological diversity does not take into account ecosystem services. While it is desirable to have a full account of species roles in the production of ecosystem services, the large number of population types and ecosystem services precludes solving such a problem in the frame of a single project. It is a matter of a long term research program. At each step specific groups of species and ecosystem services should be in the focus of interest.

In this context, our goal in ASPABIR is to produce tools for the inclusion of the erosion control and metals buffering services provided by grassland plants in the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of projects, plans and policies implemented in catchments with current and past mining and smelting activities.
